given all you have riding on that magic elixir of morning, may i be so bold to suggest (if you do not already have one) a burr grinder?though my Gaggia makes good crema, i must say my lattes have really taken a life of their own since i upgraded to a serious grinder. now i have a new problem - my SO keeps stealing my mugs of velvety perfection. :)
